The Spiral Algorithm

Knowledge and skill acquisition doesn't have to follow a linear path. The building-block school of learning theory prefers this methodology of course. Its basic premise is that each new module of learning is preceded by a foundational principle, which is itself a module dependent on a more senior principle. You can't run until you walk sort of thing.

But there is also the firehose approach to learning. It's the one I prefer quite frankly. It's the approach that throws everything at you without the least bit pretense that you will "quote" -- soak it all up. It talks to you as if you understand what's being said. Which of course you never do at first.

The idea behind the firehose approach is that if you're around things enough, eventually the immersion will nudge you to get it. This is the more dramatic and less pedantic of the two approaches. It makes things fun. But it can also lead to a bit of disorganization. Or perhaps disorientation is a better phrase. Like you've been in a dark room and someone turned on the lights. You're a bit overwhelmed about what is around you, and mostly it's all you can do to stand upright.

It doesn't help with the disorientation to turn around the room and try to focus on a part of it, but there is no other way. Unless you sit down and close your eyes, but that doesn't count. No, you have to keep spinning. Until you know what's around you without looking.
