My Portfolio is Infested with Binglebots

When my children were younger, I used to comfort them about why their favorite toy had inexplicably gone missing by telling them the story about Binglebots. It helped them deal with the loss, and gave them insight into possible unseen worlds. The story goes like this.

Back in the times when kings and queens ruled the world, there were grand palaces that needed to be maintained. This was no small matter and required a considerable staff of guards, cooks, maids, man-servants and messengers. Even with all these workers, there was still a small job for these strange creatures called Binglebots. They where about six inches tall and had the ability to move quickly, but were a bit nervous around humans. Mostly, they were nocturnal and preferred working when humans were asleep. Their primary vocation was to pick up stuff that was lying around the floor -- anything from turkey leg bones to small jewels -- and move them somewhere else. They made no distinction about what they moved, as long as it was small enough for them to furtively push around.

Well, after the fall of kingdoms, Binglebots had to find somewhere else to live. So they started living in regular peoples' houses. They still move things around and if you leave something unattended, you may not find it the next day. The Binglebots got it.

Although Binglebots are relatively harmless, they have been known to snap at people reflexively if startled. That's why it a good idea to stay in your bed overnight. Just in case you startle a Binglebot and end up with an injured ankle.

Even though it was a pretty clear morale of the story to the kids to keep track of their stuff and stay in their beds when it was time to sleep, they still needed to learn things on their own. We still have toys going mysteriously missing in our house.
